Frothing Milk: The Perfect Topping On A Latte Or Cappuccino

Frothing Milk gives a latte or cappuccino its sweet milky top. Getting this right brings the final touch to a great cup of coffee. It also gives you budding barista's a chance to practice and show off your artistic talents. Yes I'm talking about latte art. While not an indication of good milk (you could burn it) it will show others you have a passion for coffee. But before we get all excited about making flower or heart patterns, let's make sure we get the milk temperature right first.

The first tip is to start right. That means cold milk and a cold stainless steel straight walled steamer or milk jug. Yes, cold milk, not room temperature, you don't need to help the steamer wand do its thing. It takes a little longer, but the smooth velvety frothing milk you will have at the end is worth the extra effort.

* Put in the amount of milk you need for your coffee.

* Then raise the milk jug so that the steamer wand falls well below the milks surface.

* Open the steam valve, and raise the steamer wand so it sits just below the milks surface. You don't want to create large bubbles, so somewhere around 1cm (or 2/5 inch) under the milk surface will be fine.

* As the milk rises move the steamer wand accordingly. Remember your aim, smooth velvety frothing milk, not big bubbles.

* Once you have built a velvety surface, push the steamer wand deeper into the milk and continue to heat the milk.

* Wait until the milk jug is hot to touch, not warm, HOT, you should have hot velvety frothing milk.

* Then just pour into your espresso to complete a great cup.

Now, those milk patterns I mentioned earlier? It's called Latte Art. Find out how to make those works of art. Its coffee dressed to impress!!!

Cheers,
Craig.

Can You Beat The Speed Cameras?

Love them or hate them, there is no getting around it the fact that speed cameras are here to stay. Some love the fact that they cut speeding down while others say they are nothing but a way of invading your privacy.

Regardless of the fact, if you are caught speeding then the simple answer is there isn't much you can do about it. You could of course go to Court and argue the fact, but if they caught you on film, then generally the camera doesn't lie. This of course means that in addition to the fine you originally got, you now have to pay Court costs too.

While speed cameras are undoubtedly put there to safeguard the driver and the public by cutting down and clamping down on those who habitually speed, we all speed at sometime or another even if this is as little as going just a few miles over the limit. These are the people who generally get the letter through their letterbox, the one timers, not that there is an excuse for any speeding no matter how small.

However the average person can receive between 3 and 6 points on their licence from speeding and when it comes to renewing their car insurance, this can make a huge difference to the amount they have to pay. Whether speeding is on the increase or not, one fact remains, that by April this year it was estimated that around 1.3 million drivers had on average around 9 points on their licence.

Points on your licence do make a difference to the premium that you pay and in order to get the cheapest insurance your licence should be clean.

In order to get the best possible deal on car insurance, drive safely, keep within the speed limits and shop around for the right deal.

How to Start Your Affiliate Business

Does this sound familiar:

Getting started is easy!
-- Complete the online application below.
-- Read the Affiliate Agreement and the additional terms included with it!
-- We notify you of your acceptance.
-- Place the links on your site and Start earning cash!

Just like that, you think you are on your way to earning 100s of dollars in income right away. You hear the success stories. You see the potential for earning an income on the internet. You jump right in and join a bunch of affiliate programs, purchase the services and software that you are told that you need. Now you have spent all this money and have still not made anything to show for your efforts.

What you need to do is start by planning out your business. Make sure that you have an overall business plan. Put this down on paper. When planning your business, you need to determine which affiliate programs to join. You want to avoid just putting up a list of affiliate links. This will never encourage people to buy from you. Do your research about products and services. There is so much out there on the internet about everything this should not be a hard task. Look to see what people are out there buying. Keep in mind that most people on the internet are looking for information. Make sure that you are able to provide then with the information that is helpful to them. Choose something that you can be passionate about and work hard at showing people how your product or service will help them. This will encourage visitors to click on that banner and purchase the goods or services that you are promoting.

Once you have figured out what your business is then it is time to establish a presentation of your business - Your WEB SITE. This does not have to be a grand 20 page web site. It is more of a one to two page site that allows you to pitch your business. Remember, if you are not building a business, you are not going to earn any money on affiliate sites. You want to keep your site very easy to understand and browse through. You want to make sure that you show your passion about the products or services that you are selling. Show people what the product or service can do for them. Make them think that it is something that they cannot live without. Use testimonials and personalize your web page for the product or service. You want people to see that you are just the average Joe who has found this wonderful product and show what it is going to do for them. It does not have to be anything elaborate. In fact, simplicity is the key to keeping people on your site. The more Bling that you have going on, the less likely that people will stay on your site.

Remember, starting any business is difficult. Dont expect to make big money right away. It takes time to establish trust with customers. But, by planning your business and building a quality site, you will avoid the mistakes that many affiliates make. You will be way ahead of the pack and on your way to building a viable web BUSINESS.

The Role Of Work In Recovery

Work plays an important role for a person recovering from a mental illness. The workplace provides a social support system and the opportunity for people to regain their sense of self-esteem, control and self-worth.

Although in some more severe instances a return to work is not possible, once on the path to recovery, many individuals can benefit tremendously from working again. A supportive workplace can offer a sense of stability that is otherwise hard to find.

The reintegration of an employee into the workplace after recovery again requires the employer's flexibility. Often the process has to be gradual. The workload may have to change temporarily and hours and days worked may have to be altered. Job sharing and people working with an emergency fill-in person are considerations depending on the individual's and employer's needs.

The benefits of understanding

The benefits to the employer of accommodating the return of an employee are many. They avoid the added costs of hiring a new employee, and training and raising him or her to d level of productivity comparable to that of an experienced worker. Overall morale will rise as employees see the care placed on the individual, and coworkers share in the challenges faced by the returning staff member.

Employers and employees alike will always benefit from breaking down the stigma attached to mental illness in the workplace. Removing the barriers to education, open discussion, flexibility and acceptance will ultimately allow those needing medical attention and social support to seek help and receive it.

Everyone knows when to go to the hospital in a physical emergency, but what are the warning signs of emotional emergencies? When and how do we get help for these urgent conditions? Most of us fear and/or dread mental illness, so it's hardly surprising that emotional emergency is a widely taboo topic. This accounts for why many of us lack the insight and resources to deal with urgent emotional situations in our own lives, or in the lives of our friends and families.

It benefits all of us, however, to understand how we can respond to these events, which can be just as life-threatening as severe accidents or physical illnesses. According to Roderic Gorney, M.D., a Los Angeles, Calif. psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and professor of psychiatry at UCLA Medical School, "Not only are friends and family members very capable of handling these crises that come along, but every once in a while, you run into someone who has a great understanding of human nature." Although most people may not be experienced with mental illness, says Dr. Gorney, "They have had decades of experience trying to figure out people's minds. Never undersell your own intuition and never ignore your own experience," he advises.

Before you can help the situation, it helps to have a diagnosis. "In mental health," Dr. Gorney says, "the average person doesn't realize that there are very specific diagnoses for feeling terrible emotionally." What you do about your condition, or someone else's, depends on the diagnosis. "A generalized anxiety state could have a medical basis, a stress basis, or could be a result of a conflict that the individual is placed in by someone else," Dr. Gorney explains.

While traumatic life changes, such as loss of a spouse, parent, job or health often trigger emotional emergencies, physical illnesses may also precipitate them, says Dr. Gorney. "Certain sudden anxiety experiences may be due to physical causes, such as the rare adrenal tumor," he says. In the case of sudden manic psychosis, such as when someone with a very high fever is deluded and is physically combative, they may need acute medical care to save them from a fatality. Dr. Gorney advises restraining the individual and calling 911 for paramedics in these cases. Individuals who become suicidal or show signs of acute onset depressive psychosis must also be restrained while someone calls 911 for help.

In less dramatic emotional emergencies, such as when people experience modest depression or anxiety and/or start exhibiting changes in diet, weight, sleep, job attendance, mood and behavior, individuals can seek a psychiatric referral from a primary care provider. "If you're not getting referred," Dr. Gorney says, "you have to push on it. Speak with your care manager in the HMO or insurance person who can authorize that kind of a consultation."

Many health insurance plans fail to cover psychiatric referrals and some people lack insurance altogether, but low-cost resources can be located via your local or state psychiatric society. Your local hospital and county medical association are other possible sources for information on low-cost mental health clinics.

Attorney Marketing Requires Handling Prospective Client Objections Part 1

Elder law is probably not your practice area, however, you do have objections from prospective clients and you do need to figure out how to deal with them in a way that maximizes conversion. You know, those things prospective clients say around money issues or needing to think about it when you finish your pitch. I am writing this article on the topic of objections to help you think through how you will deal with your prospective client objections regardless of your practice area.

One thing to pay attention to with objections is the managers mantra in attorney marketing. The mantra is: If you cant measure it. You cant manage it. Thinking through what you will say when objections occur and scripting out the responses (without memorizing them though) allows you to not be surprised or maybe anxious while having to figure out on the fly how to respond. You need to have a plan in advance with attorney marketing conversion skill sets.

Having a script (your plan) also enables you to test for scripts that are working versus those that are not working as you hone the script to the best it can be in order to maximize the number of times a client says your hired (even though you might say the words slightly differently each time you use the script). After all, if you are excellent at attorney marketing in general but poor at conversion skills you will have to work a lot harder. Finally, if you have a lot of unconscious competence in handling objections in your practice now, if you put that on paper it becomes valuable attorney marketing intellectual property that becomes an element of what you sell one day when you sell your practice. Also now it can be taught to others in your practice that then can become competent like you.

First let us talk a little about context or overall attitude to objections in attorney marketing. In classical selling the term is overcoming objections. We dont want to overcome anyone really. The last thing we want to do is back someone into a corner and overcome him or her. People dont like to be pressured and you dont want to look like a salesman. So dont approach dealing with objections in attorney marketing from a win/lose, right/wrong, or dominate/be-dominated perspective. This overcoming or pushy attitude can ruin your relationship and give the prospective client the impression you only care about making the sale instead of caring about them.

The attorney marketing attitude we need is one of not really caring if the person hires you or not. Sort of Buddha like in the sense you are not attached to what the client decides, however you are committed to them making a decision that is educated, well facilitated and right for them in their view even if the decision is no thanks. Thus no sales pressure ever is allowed in words or in attitude. If you find yourself wanting to convince the person then you are off track with attorney marketing conversion success.

Another key attorney marketing attitude is permission. You always need to get permission in attorney marketing from the prospective client if you decide to ask questions or make guesses that might make the client a little uncomfortable. Prospective clients indeed have concerns about moving forward and we want to help them explore those concerns if they give us the permission to do so. If not, then we dont want to go there as they say these days. You certainly dont want to get into a position where you are chasing the client to get the business either. If they dont want to go there then let it drop with respect for their position in the matter. Even if it looks misguided to you (more detail on this later). You cant win them all in attorney marketing for sure.

Well, enough for the context or attitudinal aspects of attorney marketing and lets move on to the draft scripts I made for my current elder care attorney to start his process and give you some food for thought. Note that we are still perfecting these scripts and these were just my initial input designed for him. Here you go:

Money Type Objections:

Note: Your attorney marketing sales script needs to be created as well sometimes called the pitch. If you craft that well, it will minimize the chance for objections or at least inoculate the prospective client to any objections that arise later. Thus the objections will be easily handled in a positive way. This article does not address this sales script attorney marketing skill set, only the objections skill set.

First response always: I can understand the fee could show up as a concern to you. Few people have unlimited funds who come to our practice with problems like yours. Would it be OK if I talked a little about your concerns around the fee? (Here the attorney marketing principle is agree, permission and then re-direct. First do the agree statement part and then the permission question part. The possible re-direct options comes next and start below.)

Possible re-direct: It is often useful to think of the fee more like an investment. The average cost of a nursing home per month in Florida is between $5,000.00 and $6,000.00. With the price of private pay incidentals, it is not uncommon to see the total monthly bill in excess of $7,000.00 or over $84,000 per year. For the investment of XXXX you will save about $XXXXX. Thinking of it that way the investment in our services is a really a great return?

Possible re-direct: By way of an example. If I were to offer to give you or save you $1,000 that you never would have had without me, would you give me $100? We are in a similar situation here dont you think? (Pause here for a beat or two for emphasis) At least that is one way to think about it.

Possible re-direct: If this fee is outside of your range, I will refer you to a financial planner not an attorney who may be able to accommodate the fee range you are looking for, however, using a financial planner has some distinct disadvantages you probably have read about in the material we gave you earlier. If you have not been able to read it as yet I would be happy to tell you about those disadvantages. If you do decide to go that route you need to be aware of the ways you could be harmed and maybe avoid them. I am not referring you to another attorney because from my research I know my fees are the lowest in the area for this practice area and that has been our firms policy by design to be the low cost provider (this one may be better in the pitch section than in the objections section also I dont recommend one deliberately be the low cost provider in a market but this client was at least currently).

Possible re-direct: In making the decision to do this, is the price you have to pay the only consideration for you? (This will get the focus off of just the price and on to quality and value for the price.)

Possible re-direct: Could the fee seem too high to you or is it that you just dont have a way to pay the fee right now and are wondering how to raise that kind of money now?

Possible re-direct: I certainly do understand. You dont go looking for the cheapest price when you need brain surgery and this is not exactly brain surgery. At the same time it is not like you are buying something you can find anywhere like a can of soup either.

Possible re-direct: I certainly do understand. Often people sort of automatically are thinking the price is too high. I do it too. Did you know that even people who sell parachutes to skydivers hear the cost is too much? So I understand. I am curious though. Could you tell me more about your concerns around the fee so I can understand better what your concerns are?

Possible re-direct: your price is too high say: You may be right. I am a bit curious though. Do you mind if I ask you a question? If you think our fee is too high, you must be comparing it to something. Do you mind me asking what is it that you are comparing it to? Or Can you tell me a bit more about what makes you think our fee is too high?

In Objections Part 2, I will give you the drafts for I want to think about it. If you go to my website and sign up for my free 7-part eCourse on Client Development you will find more on the general subject of attorney marketing scripts that includes the area of objections in the 6th lesson. You will also find sample scripts for the pitch that precedes any objections.

Vehicle Accident Settlement

Vehicle accidents are one of the common accidents we face on a daily basis. However, not all vehicle accidents results in fender benders and minor property damage. A lot of vehicle accidents are serious and are even fatal.

Vehicle accidents involving two cars are bad enough if the collision happens at high speeds. Serious injuries like broken bones, contusions, spinal cord injury and head trauma could even be sustained. Factors also vary. Natural causes like heavy fog, wet or icy road conditions and heavy rain could be a factor. Another could be negligence of the drivers who are sleepy, drunk, too old or just in a hurry to go somewhere that they become reckless resulting in car accidents. Others still could be a result of defective vehicles or poorly maintained vehicles where signal lights or brakes do not work resulting in accidents.

If the vehicles involved in the accident that caused serious injuries are both cars, imagine the damage and injuries that will be sustained if the collision involves a car and a truck or a car and motorcycle or even a motorcycle and a bus. As you can see, any vehicle accident has a tendency of becoming a life changing accident for any person involved.

As with any other accident, claims for damages are rarely simple. In vehicle accidents, there is somebody who is almost always at fault. If you want to claim damages as a victim of the accident, you will definitely have to face the insurance adjuster of the insurance company of the negligent person. If you have been unfortunate enough to be hit by an uninsured motorist, then you have to contend with your own insurance adjuster.

In any event, your claims are usually greatly reduced if not altogether denied by adjusters and lawyers of the negligent party. Even if you hire expert lawyers and your claim goes to trial, protracted litigation could cost you even more in attorneys fees and the time, effort and stress that goes into litigating your claim.

What you should do in this case is to hire not just any lawyer but expert vehicle accident lawyers who are adept not only in litigating your claims but also possess great negotiation and settlement skills.

Settling your claims could prove more beneficial to you so long as you are sure you are not getting short changed in exchange for a more expedient means of settling your just and reasonable claims.

The Complete Story on Aircraft and Yacht Sales Tax

In the everyday world of aircraft and yacht ownership, the following story is played out from coast to coast. The whispers in the crowds of prospective owners often are based on the age-old question, is it really possible to legally avoid sales tax, or am I risking embarrassment if I get caught trying? The stress often crashes into the life of the financial personnel to find workable solutions after the client takes the survey of his friends on the golf course.

The CPA cringes while he is instructed by his client to make the new deal work by tomorrow morning, and oh, by the way, I dont want to waste a nickel on tax. He inherently knows that no matter how careful he is to explain every minute detail of the strategy to Mr. Big, it is ultimately the owner who will demand that he be able to use his new toy wherever and however he wants. He will end the meeting by commanding the CPA to, make it work out, Im sure you can find a way.

Many buyers listen to the free advice that comes once they first enter the sales cycle. The sales person who generally works with the belt and suspenders clients often take the most conservative approach and advise against risky tax schemes. The wheeler-dealer salesperson blabs on about the latest trick and pats the back of his new client while he croons, trust me, it is easy to get out of the tax.

Neither approach will serve the new owner very well. The basic problem is that, unlike federal tax advice which is based on a code that applies everywhere in the United States, sales tax laws depend on the codes written in each separate state. Currently five states have no sales and use tax. However, that leaves forty-five others that will require proper research. Unless you have nothing to do but spend your entire life doing sales and use tax research, it is impossible to keep track of the constant changes state-by-state. The basic problem with implementing a credible tax strategy for an aircraft or yacht purchase is that the buyer must mesh the details of a strategy that reduces the income tax obligation, minimizes the capital gains tax, reduces property tax and quite possibly eliminates the sales/use tax.

When you add like kind forward or reverse exchanges and fractional share ownerships into the components of an aircraft strategy, you then must consider how each piece of ownership or each transaction caused by the exchange through an intermediary may create a potential sales or use tax assessment.

With proper planning and research you can assist your client to legally avoid sales/use tax on the purchase of an aircraft or vessel. However, it depends on how much the purchaser values the money saved, versus, the effort required to go through the legal hoops to avoid the tax. If your client is an aircraft or yacht dealer, you can also help the business to bulletproof their records from an audit by the Board of Equalization. An effective strategy should include components that protect both the buyer and the seller.

Sales tax research must contain a foundation of a basic understanding of the law that will apply in all cases, they must be targeted to focus in on the exact needs of the client. Once the foundation is established, the client can then do a risk analysis of the available options. In all cases the burden of proof rests with the taxpayer.

In order to support a claim for an exemption two basic things are required. It is essential that both the form and the substance of the transaction are met. It is not sufficient enough to actually do all the things the local law requires to exempt the transaction. It is equally vital that the taxpayer can adequately document the actual possession, storage and use of the property. For example, a taxpayer could read the laws in California that pertain to a purchase for out-of-state use. He subsequently actually does all the things that are required, including out of state possession, and using and storing the aircraft or yacht outside California enough time to meet the requirements of California Sales and Use Tax Regulation 1620 (b) (3). The transaction can still be held taxable if the acceptable forms and documents which support the actual use of the property are not provided to the tax agency. The fact that in many cases the state does not question the transaction until after the aircraft or vessel is sold to another party makes it very difficult to gather the logs and receipts.

Some of the various types of exemptions that are available to the CPAs clients are:

1. Common carrier (Aircraft only)
2. Interstate commerce
3. Purchased for out of state use
4. Purchase for resale
5. Occasional sale
6. Out of state buyer
7. Lease
8. Facts or circumstances defined in law which allows the purchase to fall outside the definition of sale or purchase for sales and use tax purposes.

Even though each state may have sections which relate to each of the above, you cannot presume that the details of the exemption are the same from state to state. For example, the language in certain sections of law in Nevada are exactly the same words used in California Sales and Use Tax, however, Nevada and California interpret the same language differently. You must research the cases to decipher each states pattern of decision making.

The important details actually depend on how the requirement by each state will impact the needs of the purchaser. Some questions that need to be asked of the clients so that the CPA can assist them to differentiate between the possible exemptions are:

1. Common Carrier (Aircraft only)
Do you really want strangers flying in your new aircraft? Exclusive use may void this exemption.
Are you contemplating a lease arrangement with a charter, or are you planning to acquire your own FAA certificate?
Are you aware that the documentation requirements and the term of the test period may be significantly greater than most other exemptions?

2. Interstate Commerce
Do you know how your specific state defines interstate commerce?
How do you calculate intrastate flights using this test?
Where must possession occur?
How are first use, first functional use, and operational use defined?
What are the procedural requirements of the test?

3. Purchased for out of state use
Where must possession or title occur?
How is first functional use defined?
How long is the test period?
What are the procedural requirements of the test?
How does the aircraft owner document periods of time when the aircraft is not in flight, or the vessel is moored?
What circumstances shorten the test period?
How does storage for shipment affect the exemption?

4. Purchase for resale
Can a purchaser of a single item claim this exemption, or must the owner be a registered dealer?
Can any use, other than bonafide demonstration and display be made?
What are the documentation requirements to support demonstration use?
How much use is too much to claim a resale exemption?
Can a charge be levied for a demonstration flight of an aircraft?
How does personal use affect the exemption?

5. Occasional use
Is this exemption available in the state the purchaser intends to claim this exemption?
What characteristics must the seller avoid, in order for the sale to qualify as an occasional sale?

6. Out of state buyer
Can an out of state buyer avoid sales tax on an aircraft or vessel? If so what are the requirements?
How long can an aircraft remain in state after the purchase before the transaction becomes taxable?
What if repairs or training are required?

7. Lease
Is it a lease to a common carrier?
Is it a lease to a flight school?
Is it a lease to a private party?
Is it a lease to a contract carrier?
How is the tax reported?
How does the purchaser insure that he can purchase the property ex-tax and pay based on the lease?
Is the tax assessed on the lessor or the lessee?

Based on my research, the types of failures that are inherent by using the possible exemptions are:

A. Common carrier (Aircraft only)
Many people believe that merely flying the aircraft in Part 135 qualifies for an exemption.
When the owner is in control of the aircraft, he may be causing a failure of the exemption by flying in Part 91.
When the owner leases an aircraft to a charter, he puts the control of the documents needed to support the exemption in the hands of another party.
Insufficient revenues may void the exemption.
All Part 135 flights do not qualify as common carrier flights.

B. Interstate commerce
Failure to keep exact logs
Failure to document commerce flights
Is the test accomplished by miles, hours, or days?

C. Purchased for out-of-state use
Failure to properly document location of the aircraft or yacht when title or possession is transferred
Failure to keep proper logs
Failure to document storage location and time
Inconsistencies in documentation
Failure to support intent
Registering an aircraft or yacht in Oregon, Nevada or to a Delaware corporation as part of a strategy to avoid tax, can incur a fraud penalty for evasion.

D. Purchase for resale
Making improper use of inventory
Charging for use
Personal use
Documenting demonstration and display

E. Occasional sale
This exemption is not available in all states.
Failing to support the status of the seller
Transferring debt between entities along with the aircraft or vessel

F. Out of state buyer
Failure to prove the legal status of the out of state resident
In state residency for the purpose of sales tax can require as little as a checking or savings account.

G. Lease
Failure to properly notify the state to be able to purchase ex-tax
Failure to understand against whom the tax is levied and how it impacts the client
Failure to understand whether it is a sales tax or use tax

When a purchase is of a fractional share of an aircraft it becomes almost impossible to use certain exemptions because of the needs of the other owners. A winning strategy can be implemented, but it requires the compliance of the fractional partnership.

If an aircraft strategy includes a 1031 like kind exchange, each possible exemption needs to be evaluated versus the four transactions required to complete each exchange. Each of the four transactions has it own tax exposure. When a reverse exchange is used, five transactions are created that need to be evaluated. A further complication is that some states will consider the qualified intermediary as a retailer of aircraft because it is engaged in the business of selling aircraft. It is fatal to forget that IRS rulings have no bearing on how each state views each transaction.

Armed with an understanding of the sales and use tax laws it is possible to create a strategy that legally avoids the sales and use tax. Acquiring sales tax advice from anyone, other than a sales tax expert is in most cases a waste of time and money. This area of tax law is too complex, the targets are constantly changing, and the potential tax assessment is very costly. Especially when you add the additional interest and penalties that can range from as little as ten percent for failure to file, up to a fifty percent penalty for registering an aircraft out of state in an attempt to evade tax.

Weapon Tips For Quake III

FPS games such as Quake III are fast paced games which generate a lot of energy and adrenaline rush. To take the Quake III experience to the next level, being skillful and adept at using the weapons involved, really helps.

The most basic weapon in Quake III is the gauntlet. It is an effective weapon at a very close range as it deals a lot of damage to the opponent if struck properly. If your strafing is good, then you can use a gauntlet against an opponent holding the rail gun. Avoid using it against rocket launchers, plasma guns or shotguns.

The default weapon is the machine gun. The damage it does is low but the accuracy rate is very high at both long and short range. Also the attack speed of the weapon is very fast. It is a good weapon to use to hunt down opponents running away at very low health.

Shotguns are very useful at short range. They cause damage depending on how accurate the shot is, up to enough damage to kill an opponent, in just two accurate hits. Though the damage is spread over an area around the target, it is best if you take your time to aim and get an as accurate hit as possible.

Plasma gun is most effective on medium range. It causes a lot of damage, has a high fire rate and is easy to use. Due to the high speed of the plasma and the fire rate it is best to aim directly at the target at closer ranges. At medium or longer range, fire a burst of plasma at a spread area, predicting the movements of the opponent.

Rocket launcher and rail guns are the two favorite weapons for all professional Quake III players due to their high amounts of damage. Rocket launchers have huge splash damage. At short range it is best to aim directly at the enemy. At medium or long range, predict the opponent's movements and try and aim at the ground below him or the any walls close to him.

No predictions are needed in railguns, it is all about accuracy. These are the hardest weapons to use but also the most damaging. It requires a lot of practice and control.

Every weapon has its own advantages and therefore to improve your game you must know how and when to use each weapon according to the situation. Gun switching is what separates a good player from a brilliant one.

How an Advanced Print Management and Spooling Solution Improves Printing in a Windows Server

In this case study, we will explore why a company needs a Print Management and Advanced Print Spooling solution like OM Plus to manage enterprise printing in their Windows Server Environment. The Windows Spooling System (WSS) is ubiquitous in large-scale Windows Server installations but there are very clear business cases where an advanced print management and spooling solution adds tremendous business value to document driven business processes.

Company For the purposes of this case study, we have consolidated multiple companies Windows printing challenges in order to present a more comprehensive picture of the benefits that OM Plus delivers.

Business Problem Most business processes require some type of output to be initiated and/or considered complete. This output is created by business applications (ERPs Financial Applications, HR Applications, Payroll Applications, etc.), and includes things like invoices, checks, financial reports, shipping and manufacturing related documents, etc. The output is usually delivered to its end destination (most commonly a printer) to initiate and/or complete the business process. Enterprise-based output printing is most often batch oriented and is distinguished from normal desktop printing by the fact that it is mission critical. It is more demanding; time sensitive and business processes can fall apart if the printing is not successfully completed and managed. It is extremely important to the completion of a business process to know that a document has printed. Cash is not collected if invoices dont print, goods are not shipped if the pick lists dont print, and vendors dont get paid if A/P checks dont print. What is the impact on your business if invoices dont get sent out even though your application sent them to the printer and assumes they printed?

The key business problem faced in a Windows Server environment is the lack of a robust print management and spooling system that has advanced, post-spooling functionality. The Windows Spooling System (WSS) works fairly well in terms of performing the duties for which it was designed, spooling print jobs and delivering them to a printer. However, advanced, post spooling functionality is virtually non-existent in WSS and this causes business problems. The Windows Spooling System lacks the post-spooling, batch printing tools that are needed to streamline document centric business processes in an enterprise class print management environment.

Key Technical Challenge Unfortunately, none of the Windows Server Operating Systems WSSs have been designed to handle the production delivery of documents across an enterprise or provide advanced post spooling document delivery functionality. These shortcomings of WSS impact business processes and add unnecessary support costs. Due to these shortcomings, problems arise with reliable and confirmed document delivery, centralized print management and control across dissimilar systems, document integration with electronic forms, and the supportability of the entire enterprises document delivery systems. Documents are lost, not delivered correctly or in a timely fashion and customer satisfaction or business processes suffer.

Additionally, because the Windows Spooling System (WSS) lacks post-spooling tools it cannot provide the following functions that are often necessary to successfully maintain an enterprise class print management environment. WSS does not provide:

Confirmation of the print job landing in the output tray-Assuring to the application that a document has been successfully printed

Automatic addition of print specific finishing commands without user intervention-Users can request finishing commands but this is not usually practical in large batch printing

Server level accounting-Who printed what, where and how much around the whole enterprise

Scalability of print infrastructure-After more than 150 print queues WSS scalability is questionable

Load Balancing-WSS can provide overflow load balancing but to get true round robin printing where all printers are shared equally, not just when the first one is busy, requires OM Plus

Document re-printing without having to re-create or re-spool the job-Since WSS purges the job after delivery to the printer buffer, there is not an easy way to re-print the job or portions of the job, without re-creating it and re-spooling it

Job priority controls-If a large job is dominating a printer, it is difficult to stop the job and allow others to print, then re-start the large job where it stopped with WSS

Auto fail-over and re-routing of jobs around failed printers-WSS can not automatically re-route a print job around a failed printe

Viewing in WYSIWYG after spooling, prior to printing-If a user wants to view the job without printing it, WSS does not provide a WYSIWYG view. This can be very useful and provide cost savings for jobs that only need to be viewed but not actually printed

The ability to block jobs automatically that are too large, unauthorized, or not to be printed on the mounted form-Business rules can not be set up in WSS so that jobs can be re-directed or put on hold when they are sent to a printer not suited to print the job, i.e. 1000 page report being sent to a desktop printer cannot be stopped, re-routed to a production size printer and then an e-mail sent to the report requester notifying them of the re-routing. With OM Plus this is possible

Re-printing from a specific page after the job has been delivered to the printer buffer-WSS will purge it when it is finished delivering the job to the printer, not when the last page is successfully printed, making it difficult to know exactly what page needs to print next. Critical need in check printing to print the next check correctly after a printer problem

Technical Solution The technical solution implemented at our customers with these business problems is OM Plus, the Advanced Print Spooling and Print Management solution from Plus Technologies.

At the heart of the OM Plus suite of product solutions is the OM Plus Server. It monitors all system activities and performs the core tasks associated with the delivery of documents such as, job scheduling, queue management, security, job status, printer administration and other system functions. It is constantly aware of all relevant system elements, queues, printers, fax servers, e-mail servers, pagers, web pages, archive systems, e-forms, document types, user authorities, servers, and priorities.

End-to-End Confirmation

OM Plus provides end-to-end confirmation all the way to the final destination. It can even confirm the delivery of a job because it can tell when the paper has landed in the output tray for PJL compliant printers. End-to-end confirmation allows the administrators to locate the problem area when delivery interruptions and failures occur. OM Plus is fully SNMP compliant and can capture data provided by SNMP devices. This allows users to see more detailed information on device status (i.e. the printer is low on toner). OM Plus can even talk directly to web enabled devices to gather detailed status information.

Automated, event based processing

Events such as printer problems can be defined so that OM Plus automatically notifies an administrator via pager or e-mail of the printer problem. Other events such as a printer is busy or the form the job requires is loaded in another printer can trigger automatic re-routing of a print job.

Printer & Print Management

According to industry experts, a typical organization can spend as much as fifteen percent of its total revenue on printing and print management. Organizations that proactively manage their print output can reduce the high costs associated with printing.

OM Plus superior print management functionality improves productivity and reduces cost.

OM Plus:

Allows central control and monitoring of the status of printer devices and jobs across the entire organization from a single status screen improving help desk productivity.

Ensures delivery of output to its final destination in the correct format.

Greatly reduce help desk calls.

Maximizes printer availability.

Reduces costs associated with manual bursting and distribution of reports with electronic bursting and bundling of reports (with RD/RB Plus options)

Users can add or remove printers themselves from their own class of printers

Audit and Accounting Logs

The OM Plus accounting log tracks usage data that is required in charge back environments. The audit log assists with troubleshooting and problem resolution. Both are viewable, searchable, exportable and customizable making problem resolution faster.

Document Viewing

The viewer in OM Plus views all text documents and simple PCL. OM Plus will automatically launch additional viewers to view more complex document formats.

Printer Status Monitoring

OM Plus captures a rolling log of PJL statements from the printer. This log allows a user to view the actual status of a printer.

Implementation On site services including installation, system configuration, testing and user training was delivered by service engineers from Plus Technologies to all of these customers. In all cases, the implementation was completed and in production within two to three weeks of the order.

An Introduction to Weather Normalization of Utility Bills for Alternative Energy Contractors

UTILITY BILL TRACKING: THE REPORT CARD FOR ALTERNATIVE ENERGY CONTRACTORS

More and more, alternative energy contractors want to prove to customers the savings they expect. Customers often want to know that they have saved the energy and costs they were originally promised. From the customers’ viewpoint, the simplest and most understandable proof of energy savings comes from a simple comparison of electricity bills. Did the system save on electricity costs or not?(1) In theory, a simple comparison of pre-installation bills to post-installation bills, and you will see if you have saved.

But if it is so easy, why write a paper on this? Well, it isn’t so easy. Let’s find out why.

Figure 1.1: Expected Pre and Post-Retrofit usage for chilled water system retrofit. (http://www.abraxasenergy.com/alternative-energy-utility-bill-tracking.html)

Suppose a solar energy contractor installed a new solar electric system for a building. One likely would expect to see energy and cost savings from this retrofit. Figure 1.1 presents results our alternative energy contractor might expect.

But what if, instead, the bills presented the disaster shown in Figure 1.2?

Figure 1.2: A disaster of a project? Comparison of Pre-Retrofit and Post-Retrofit data (http://www.abraxasenergy.com/alternative-energy-utility-bill-tracking.html)

Imagine showing a customer these results after they have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in your system. It is hard to inspire confidence in your abilities with results like this.

How should the solar energy contractor present this data to customer? Do you think the contractor would be feeling confident about the job, and about getting referrals for future solar projects? Probably not. The customer might simply look at the figures and, since figures don’t lie, conclude they have hired the wrong contractor, and that the solar system doesn’t work very well!

There are many reasons the system may not have delivered the expected savings. A possibility is that the project is delivering savings, but the summer after the installation was much hotter than the summer before the installation. Hotter summers translate into higher air conditioning loads, which could result in higher utility bills.

Hotter Summer >> Higher Air Conditioning Load >> Higher Summer Utility Bills

In our example, we are claiming that because the post-installation weather was hotter, the solar electric project looked like it didn’t save any energy, even though it really did. Imagine explaining that to customers!

If the weather really was the cause of the higher usage, then how could you ever use utility bills to measure savings from solar energy projects? Your savings numbers would be at the mercy of the weather. Savings numbers would be of no value at all (unless the weather was the same year after year).

Our example may appear a bit exaggerated, but it begs the question: Could weather really have such an impact on savings numbers?

It can, but usually not to this extreme. The summer of 2005 was the hottest summer in a century of record-keeping in Detroit, Michigan. There were 18 days at 90F or above, compared to the usual 12 days. In addition, the average temperature in Detroit was 74.8F compared to the normal 71.4 F. At first glance, 3 degrees doesn’t appear significant, however, if you convert the temperatures to cooling degree days(2), as shown in Figure 1.3, the results look dramatic. Just comparing the June through August period, there were 909 cooling degree days in 2005 as compared to 442 cooling degree days in 2004.

That is more than double! Cooling Degree Days are roughly proportional to relative building cooling requirements. For Detroit then, one can infer that an average building required (and possibly consumed) more than twice the amount of energy for cooling in the summer of 2005 than the summer of 2004. It is likely that in the Upper Midwestern United States there were several solar contractors who faced exactly this problem!

Figure 1.3: Cooling Degree Days in Detroit, Michigan for 2004 and 2005 (http://www.abraxasenergy.com/alternative-energy-energy-software.html)

How is a solar energy contractor going to show savings from a solar electric system under these circumstances? A simple comparison of utility bills will not work, as the expected savings will get buried beneath the increased cooling load. The solution would be to somehow apply the same weather data to the pre- and post-installation bills. Then there would be no penalty for extreme weather. This is exactly what weather normalization does. To show savings from a retrofit (or good alternative energy practice), and to avoid our disastrous example, an alternative energy contractor should normalize the utility bills for weather, so that changes in weather conditions will not compromise the savings numbers.

The practice of normalizing energy bills to weather with energy software is catching on, with more and more energy managers, energy engineers, and contractors correcting their bills for weather because they want to be able to prove that they are actually saving energy from their efforts. This process has many names: weather correction, weather normalization, tuning to weather, tuning, or weather regression.

HOW WEATHER NORMALIZATION WORKS

Rather than compare last year’s usage to this year’s usage, when we use weather normalization, we compare how much energy we would have used this year to how much energy we did use this year. Many in our industry do not call the result of this comparison, “Savings”, but rather “Usage Avoidance” or “Cost Avoidance” (if comparing costs). But, since we are trying to keep this chapter at an introductory level, we will simply use the word Savings.

When we tried to compare last year’s usage to this year’s usage, we saw Figure 1.2, and a disastrous project. We used the equation:

Savings = Last year’s usage – This year’s usage

When we normalize for weather, the same data results in Figure 1.4, and uses the equation:

Savings = How much energy we would have used this year – This year’s usage

Figure 1.4: Comparison of Baseline and Actual (Post-Retrofit) data with Weather Correction (http://www.abraxasenergy.com/alternative-energy-energy-software.html)

The next question is, how do we figure out how much energy we would have used this year? That is where weather normalization comes in.

First, we select a year of utility bills(3) to which we want to compare future usage. This would typically be the year before you started your alternative energy program, the year before you installed a retrofit, or the year before you, the new energy contractor, were hired, or just some year in the past that you want to compare current usage to. In this example, we would select the year of utility data before the installation of the solar electric system. We will call this year the Base Year(4).

Figure 1.5: Cooling Degree Days (http://www.abraxasenergy.com/alternative-energy-energy-software.html)

Then we calculate degree days for the Base Year billing periods. Because this example is only concerned with cooling, we need only gather Cooling Degree Days (not Heating Degree Days). A section on calculating Degree Days follows later in the chapter. For now, recognize only that Cooling Degree Days need to be gathered at this step.(5) Figure 1.5 presents Cooling Degree Days over two years.

Figure 1.6: Finding the relationship between usage and weather data. The blue dots represent the utility bills. The red line is the best fit line. (http://www.abraxasenergy.com/alternative-energy-energy-savings.html)

To establish the relationship between usage and weather, we find the line that comes closest to all the bills. This line, the Best Fit Line, is found using statistical regression techniques available in canned utility bill tracking software and in spreadsheets.

The next step is to ensure that the Best Fit Line is good enough to use. The quality of the best fit line is represented by statistical indicators, the most common of which, is the R2 value. The R2 value represents the goodness of fit, and in energy engineering circles, an R2 > 0.75 is considered an acceptable fit. Some meters have little or no sensitivity to weather or may have other unknown variables that have a greater influence on usage than weather. These meters may have a low R2 value. You can generate R2 values for the fit line in Excel or other canned utility bill tracking software.(6)

This Best Fit Line has an equation, which we call the Fit Line Equation, or in this case the Baseline Equation.(7) The Fit Line Equation from Figure 1.6 might be:

Baseline kWh = (5 kWh/Day * #Days) + (417 kWh/CDD * #CDD)

Once we have this equation, we are done with this regression process.

Let’s recap what we have done:
We normalized Base Year utility bills and weather data for number of days in the bill.
We graphed normalized Base Year utility data versus normalized weather data.
We found a Best Fit Line through the data. The Best Fit Line then represents the utility bills for the Base Year.
The Best Fit Line Equation represents the Best Fit Line, which in turn represents the Base Year of utility data.

Base Year bills ≈ Best Fit Line = Fit Line Equation

The Fit Line Equation represents how your customer used energy during the Base Year, and would continue to use energy in the future (in response to changing weather conditions) assuming no significant changes occurred in building consumption patterns.

Once you have the Baseline Equation, you can determine if you saved any energy.

How? You take a bill from some billing period after the Base Year. You (or your software) plug in the number of days from your bill and the number of Cooling Degree Days from the billing period into your Baseline Equation.

Suppose for a current month’s bill, there were 30 days and 100 CDD associated with the billing period.

Baseline kWh = (5 kWh/Day * #Days) + (417 kWh/CDD * #CDD)

Baseline kWh = (5 kWh/Day * 30) + (417 kWh/CDD * 100)

Baseline kWh = 41,850 kWh

Remember, the Baseline Equation represents how your customer used energy in the Base Year. So, with the new inputs of number of days and number of degree days, the Baseline Equation will tell you how much energy the building would have used this year based upon Base Year usage patterns and this year’s conditions (weather and number of days). We call this usage that is determined by the Baseline Equation, Baseline Usage.

Now, to get a fair estimate of energy savings, we compare:

Savings = How much energy we would have used this year – How much energy we did use this year

or if we change the terminology a bit:

Savings = Baseline Energy Usage – Actual Energy Usage

where Baseline Energy Usage is calculated by the Baseline Equation, using current month’s weather and number of days, and Actual Energy Usage is the current month’s bill. Both equations immediately preceding are the same, as Baseline = “How much energy we would have used this year”, and Actual represents “How much energy we did use this year.”

So, using our example, suppose this month’s bill was for 30,000 kWh:

Savings = Baseline Energy Usage – Actual Energy Usage

Savings = 41,850 kWh – 30,000 kWh

Savings = 11,850 kWh

CALCULATING DEGREE DAYS AND FINDING THE BALANCE POINT

Cooling Degree Days (CDD) are roughly proportional to the energy used for cooling a building, while Heating Degree Days, (HDD) are roughly proportional to the energy used for heating a building. Degree Days, although simply calculated, are quite useful in energy calculations. They are calculated for each day, and then are summed over some period of time (months, a year, etc.).(8)

Figure 1.7: Determining the balance point using a kWh/day vs. Outdoor Temperature graph (http://www.abraxasenergy.com/alternative-energy-energy-savings.html)

In general, daily degree days are the difference between the building’s balance point and the average outside temperature. To understand degree days, then, we first need to understand the concept of Balance Points.

Buildings have their own set of Balance Points for heating and for cooling – and they may not be the same. The Heating Balance Point can be defined as the outdoor temperature at which the building starts to heat. In other words, when the outdoor temperature drops below the Heating Balance Point, the building’s heating system kicks in. Conversely, when the outdoor temperature rises above the Cooling Balance Point, the building starts to cool.(9) A building’s balance point is determined by nearly everything associated with it, since nearly every component associated with a building has some effect on the heating of the building: building envelope construction (insulation values, shading, windows, etc.), temperature set points, thermostat set back schedules if any, the amount of heat producing equipment (and people) in the building, lighting intensity, ventilation, HVAC system type, HVAC system schedule, lighting and miscellaneous equipment schedules, among other factors.

In the past, before energy professionals used computers and utility manager software in their everyday tasks, degree day analysis was simplified by assuming balance points of 65F for both heating and cooling. As a result, it was easy to publish and distribute degree days, since everyone calculated them using the same standard (that is, using 65F as the balance point). It is more accurate, though, to recognize that every building has its own balance points, and to calculate degree days accordingly. Consequently, you are less likely to see degree days available, as more sophisticated analysis requires you to calculate your own degree days based upon your own building’s balance points.(10)

Figure 1.8: kWh /day vs Average Outdoor Temperature (http://www.abraxasenergy.com/alternative-energy-utility-manager-software.html)

To find the balance point temperature of a building, graph the Usage/Day against Average Outdoor Temperature (of the billing period) as shown in Figure 1.7. Notice that Figure 1.7 presents two trends. One trend is flat, and the other trend slopes up and to the right. We have drawn red lines signifying the two trends in Figure 1.8. (Ignore the vertical red line for now.) The flat trend represents Non-Temperature Sensitive Consumption, which is electrical consumption that is not related to weather. In Figure 1.7, Non-Temperature Sensitive Consumption is roughly the same every month, about 2450 kWh per day. Examples of Non-Temperature Sensitive Consumption include lighting, computers, miscellaneous plug load, industrial equipment and well pumps. Any usage above the horizontal red line is called Temperature Sensitive Consumption, which represents electrical usage associated with the building’s cooling system. Notice that in Figure 1.8, the Temperature Sensitive Consumption only occurs at temperatures greater than 61F. The intersection of the two trends is called the Balance Point, or Balance Point Temperature, which is 61F in this example.

Notice also that, in Figure 1.8, as the outdoor temperature increases, consumption increases. As it gets hotter outside, the building uses more energy, thus the meter is used for cooling, but not heating. The Balance Point Temperature we found is the Cooling Balance Point Temperature (not the Heating Balance Point Temperature).

Figure 1.9: kWh/day vs Average Outdoor Temperature (http://www.abraxasenergy.com/alternative-energy-utility-manager-software.html)

We can view the same type of graph for heating usage in Figure 1.9. Notice that the major difference between the two graphs, is that the Temperature Sensitive trend slopes up and to the left (rather than up and the right). As the outdoor temperature drops, the building use more electricity to heat the building.

Now that we have established our balance point temperature, we have all the information required to calculate Degree Days. If your graph resembles Figures 1.9, you will be using Heating Degree Days. If your graph resembles Figure 1.8, you will be using Cooling Degree Days.

Figure 1.10: Daily Usage Normalized to Production and Weather. The Baseline Equation is Shown at the Bottom of the Figure (http://www.abraxasenergy.com/alternative-energy-energy-consulting.html)

NORMALIZING FOR OTHER VARIABLES

More and more energy professionals are coming to understand the value of normalizing utility data for production in addition to (or instead of) weather. This works if you have a simple variable that quantifies your production. For example, a computer assembly plant can track the number of computers produced. If a factory manufactures several different products, for example, disk drives, desktop computers, and printers, it may be difficult to come up with a single variable that could be used to represent production for the entire plant (i.e. tons of product). However, since analysis is performed on a meter level rather than a plant level, if you have meters (or submeters) that serve just one production line, then you can normalize usage from one meter with the product produced from that production line.

Figure 1.10 presents normalized daily usage versus production for a widget factory. The baseline equation for this normalization is shown at the bottom of the figure. Notice that Units of Production (UPr) as well as Cooling Degree Days (CDD) are included in the equation, meaning that this normalization included weather data and production data.

School districts, colleges, and universities often normalize for the school calendar. Real estate concerns, hotels and prisons normalize for occupancy. Essentially any variable can be used for normalization, as long as it is an accurate, consistent predictor of energy usage patterns. Again, these normalizations can be performed by specialized utility bill tracking software, or using spreadsheets.

CONCLUSION

Weather varies from year to year. As a result, it becomes difficult to know whether the change in your utility bills is due to fluctuations in weather, or due to your alternative energy system, or both. If you wish to use utility bills to determine energy savings from your alternative energy system with any degree of accuracy, it is vital that you remove the variability of weather from your energy savings equation. This is done using the weather normalization techniques described in this paper. You may adjust your usage for other variables as well, such as occupancy or production.

--
1) What are the alternatives? The most common might involve determining savings for each of the energy conservation activities using a spreadsheet, or perhaps even a building model. Both of these alternative strategies could require much additional work, as the alternative energy contractor likely has employed several strategies over his tenure. One other drawback of spreadsheets is that energy conservation strategies may interact with each other, so that total savings may not be the sum of the different strategies, and finally, spreadsheets are often projections of energy savings, not measurements.

2) Cooling degree days are defined in detail later in the chapter, however a rough meaning is given here. Cooling Degree Days are a rough measure of how much a period's weather should result in a building’s cooling requirements. A hotter day will result in more Cooling Degree Days, whereas a colder day may have no Cooling Degree Days. Double the amount of Cooling Degree Days should result in roughly double the cooling requirements for a building. Cooling Degree Days are calculated individually for each day. Cooling Degree Days over a month or billing period, are merely a summation of the Cooling Degree Days of the individual days. The same is true for Heating Degree Days.

3) Some energy professionals select 2 years of bills rather than one. Good reasons can be argued both for choosing one year or two years. Do not choose periods of time that are not in intervals of 12 months (for example, 15 months, or 8 months could lead to inaccuracy).

4) Please do not confuse Base Year with Baseline. Base Year is a time period, from which bills were used to determine the building’s energy usage patterns with respect to weather data, whereas Baseline, as will be described later, represents how much energy we would have used this month, based upon Base Year energy usage patterns, and current month conditions (i.e. weather and number of days in the bill).

5) Canned energy software does this automatically for you, while in spreadsheets, this step can be tedious.

6) The statistical calculations behind the R2 value, and a treatment of three other useful indicators, T-Statistic, Mean Bias Error, and CVRMSE are not treated in this chapter. For more information on these statistical concepts, consult any college statistics textbook. (For energy contractors, a combination of R2 values and T-Statistics is usually enough.)

7) Baseline Equation = Fit Line Equation +/- Baseline Modifications. We cover Baseline Modifications later in this chapter.

8) You would not sum or average high or low temperatures for a period of time, as the result would not be useful. However, you can sum degree days, and the result remains useful, as it is proportional to the heating or cooling requirements of a building.

9) If you think about it, you don’t have to treat this at the building level, but rather can view it at a meter level. (To simplify the presentation, we are speaking in terms of a building, as it is less abstract.) Some buildings have many meters, some of which may be associated with different central plants. In such a building, it is likely that the disparate central plants would have different balance points, as conditions associated with the different parts of the building may be different.

10) If you calculate degree days by hand, or using a spreadsheet, you would use the following formulae for your calculations. Of course, commercially available utility manager software that performs weather nomalization handles this automatically.

For each day,
HDDi = [ TBP – ( Thi + Tlo ) / 2 ] x 1 Day+
CDDi = [ ( Thi + Tlo ) / 2 – TBP ] x 1 Day+

Where:
HDDi = Heating Degree Days for one day
CDDi = Heating Degree Days for one day
TBP = Balance Point Temperature,
Thi = Daily High Temperature
Tlo = Daily Low Temperature
+ signifies that you can never have negative degree days. If the HDDi or CDDi calculation yields a negative number, then the result is 0 degree days for that day.

Heating and Cooling Degree Days can be summed, respectively, over several days, a month, a billing period, a year, or any interval greater than a day. For a billing period (or any period greater than a day),

HDD = ΣHDDi
CDD = ΣCDDi

Take a look back to Figure 1.3, where you may have noticed that there are more than twice as many Cooling Degree Days (CDD) in August 2005 than in August 2004. Because Cooling Degree Days are roughly proportional to a building’s cooling energy usage, one could rightly assume that the cooling requirements of the building would be roughly double as well.

Do You Have Each Aspect Of Trust

The ability to gain and keep trust is a vital factor in being able to influence others. Research has shown, time and time again, that trust is always a contributing factor in the ability to influence others. When a person trusts you, trust alone can cause them to accept your message. On the flip side, if people dont trust you, all the evidence, reasoning, facts, or figures in the world wont get them to budge.

Trust can be an ambiguous concept, but certain things are quite clear: You cant get others to trust you unless you trust yourself first. Your message will not be convincing to others unless its convincing to you. Whenever someone tries to influence us, we ask ourselves, Can I trust this person? Do I believe him? Is she really concerned about me? We are less likely to be influenced if we sense that the person is driven solely by self-interest. Never assume that people trust you.

Always show the world you are someone to be trusted, no matter what the circumstances are. You can gain and enhance trust by doing the following:

Keep your promises
Be reliable
Under-promise and over-deliver
Admit your failures and weaknesses
Use logic with your emotion
Exhibit true concern for and about others
Never assume people completely trust you
Tell people only as much as theyll believe
Tell the truth, even if it hurts
Downplay any benefits to you

The Five Cs of Trust, will all help you gain the trust you need to have lasting influence. Let me illustrate how these elements work in a story. Imagine youre experiencing extreme tooth pain. Youve put off going to the dentist as long as possible, but now natures telling you your time has run out. You recently relocated, so your previous dentist is 2,000 miles away and no longer an option. You ask your new friends and neighbors about their dentists and get the following five responses:

1. My dentist has great CHARACTER. He is one of the most honest people I know. Hes not very competent, though. I heard hes famous for sticking the needle completely through your cheek.

Would you go to this dentist?

2. My dentist is one of the top dentists in the state. Hes extremely COMPETENT, but kind of a crook. He has no character. Hes been caught a few times for over billing and also sometimes fills more cavities than you actually have.

Would you go to this dentist?

3. My dentist doesnt have much CONFIDENCE in his work. One time he said to me, Ive never been very good at reading x-rays. I feel unsure about whether I should give you a root canal or just leave the tooth alone. Look at this x-ray and tell me what you think.

Would you go to this dentist?

4. Im not sure my dentist is licensed. I didnt see any degree or diplomas on his wall, and no one seems to know where he went to school. His office doesnt have the latest equipment. He even asked me to pay cash instead of writing a check. He has no CREDIBILITY in my book.

Would you go to this dentist?

5. My dentist is a nice guy, but he doesnt keep his stories straight. CONGRUENCY and CONSISTENCY are not his strong suits. Last year he said Id probably have to get a root canal on my molar the next time I came in. When I came back, I asked him about the root canal on my molar, and he said, You dont need a root canal on that tooth. Who told you that?

Would you go to this dentist?

Im sure you would spend more time trying to find a dentist who met all five criteria. A deep and lasting sense of trust will not exist without all five characteristics being present. We know if a person is lacking in just one of these areas, it will affect every aspect of their ability to build, gain, and maintain trust.

Do People Trust You???

3 Top Tips For A Hassle-Free House Move

Moving house? Dreading the thought of packing those boxes at one end, only to unpack it all again at the other? Moving house is one of lifes most stressful experiences, but if you take a business-like approach to your move and manage it well, youll find that everything runs smoothly.

1. Sort out your stuff

We all know how easy it is to accumulate possessions as we go through life. From the things we bought but never used, to the stuff we cant bear to get rid of; our attics and lofts contain a physical, tangible history of our lives. Moving house is usually an indication that youre making a fresh start so put aside a few hours or a few days if youre a real hoarder and go through everything to make sure youre only taking the really important stuff with you. Hire a skip for those things that are broken or of no use, and fill bags for charity shops, goodwill stores, and jumble sales. Hold your own garage sale, give childrens clothes to relatives or sell stuff on eBay but make a real effort to reduce the amount of things that need to move with you.

2. Write it down

The most organised people often have a written list that helps them to see what theyve done and what needs to be achieved. When youre moving house, you need to think about what needs preparing for packing, what needs leaving until last and, most importantly, where everything is going to go in your new home. This sort of preparation makes your life much easier. For example, when you unplug your computer, label the cables, write down instructions for setting it up again and make sure everything is bagged or boxed together.

3. Hire a good removal firm

The quality and experience of your removal firm can make all the difference to your move. You may be moving yourself, in which case you need to be a lot more organised, making sure that you have hired the right size van and that you have enough boxes and packing materials to move all your possessions safely. On the other hand, a professional removal company will handle all the packing and moving for you, leaving you free to tie-up any loose ends, make sure your old home is ready for its new occupants and get to your new place in plenty of time to supervise unloading. With full insurance cover for everything they pack and move, its the ideal way to remove stress from the moving process.

Outrageous Stiletto 100 Personal Portable Satellite Radio Stimulates The Fight To Break Free Of Terrestrial Radio

What follows in a review of satellite radio blog postings from http://www.jasonciment.com/sirius_satelliteradio_xm/ that have been written mostly about the new Sirius Stiletto 100 portable personal satellite radio just recently launched in Octover 2006. This article covers the history of satellite radios and the evolution of both XM satellite radio and Sirius satellite radio so that consumers can make more informed decisions.

The History Of Portable Satellite Radios

The gestation of Satellite radio goes back to 1992. The history of portable satellite radios is short compared to what is now known as terrestrial radio, but it has rapidly changed the face of what used to be called the world of "transistor" radios. There are 2 premiere satellite radio services, XM Satellite Radio and SIRIUS Satellite Radio, and they provide a fantastic variety of channels of private label programming and compete for customers who have not identified themselves that they are candidates for satellite radio.

With the arrival of Howard Stern and his gang of shock jock cohorts, the momentous increase in popularity has stunned many in the radio industry to the point where they have invented this concept of Free FM to set terrestrial apart from the non-free subscription based satellite radio options. And to further promote this new form of radio listening, manufacturers have worked night and day to invent new, smaller and more easily portable satellite radios. The end result is that industry veterans of the old AM/FM spectrum worry about the future of traditional broadcast radio.

The History of Satellite Radio

The history of satellite radio as stated goes back to 1992, when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) assigned a portion of the spectrum devoted to nationwide distribution of digital radio service to satellite transmission companies. SIRIUS Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio paid tens of millions of dollars from public funding ventures to obtain licenses awarded to them by the FCC. There were other applicants who didn't make the final cut by the way.

Despite winning the rare license to broadcast via satellite on this new spectrum, both companies had to overcome the first obstacle to success - which until this most recent release of the long awaited Stiletto 100 Portable Satellite Radio - getting manufacturers to produce consumer-friendly portable satellite radios to receive the signal. Even if they could start delivering satellite radio signals immediately, it was like the tree in the forest - no one could actually hear the signal. Additionally, because terrestrial radio was and still is free all over the world for the most part, the question which had to be addressed was how much if anything would people pay to receive the signal. Would a one time payment for the hardware suffice or could these 2 soon to be behemoths, produce steady cash flow with subscription based models of payment. Essentially what still remains to be answered is if consumers would be willing to pay for new hardware and then pay a monthly subscription fee for radio service or would there be a more efficient and adoptable option.

Overcoming Obstacles - Satellite Radio Launches

XM Satellite Radio and SIRIUS Satellite Radio went crazy marketing their new service in a crossing the chasm sort of way and they set out to transform their licenses into a real business by quickly introducing fairly bulky portable satellite radios and at least some enticing satellite radio programming. To attract new customers they struggled to offer adaptable hardware components that could be used in a variety of locations home, work, and especially the car, where most radio listening still occurs.

Working with electronics manufacturers like Sanyo, Panasonic, JVC and Kenwood they started developing new components. The results included portable satellite radios, receivers, and "plug and play" components for nearly every consumer application. Manufacturers built satellite radio receivers for cars, homes, offices, trucks, RVs, boats, and even airplanes.

On the programming side, XM and SIRUS starting signing wacky distribution deals for lots of millions of dollars all in the aim of putting together an assortment of niche programming channels that would have something to offer consumers with nearly any musical taste. Each station was programmed to appeal to a specific type of listener, and most were commercial-free. We're talking about Elvis, Reggae, Martha Stewart, Howard Stern and more. Programming originated primarily from New York, but also from other locations, plus XM and SIRIUS entered into collaborative agreements that would allow popular musicians, entertainers, personalities and others to perform live from the originating locations.

Dealing with resistance to a monthly fee, though, required a broader array of marketing, public relations, and strategies to communicate the benefits and advantages of portable satellite radios. XM and SIRIUS knew that the key to their success would lie in convincing consumers of the value they would receive while making the hardware widely available and affordable.

Sirius Satellite Radio vs XM Satellite Radio

Since most listening to the radio happens in the car even to this day, the companies got smart and started signing deals with car manufacturers for examples so they could get the device in the front of the end user in the easiest and most direct manner. They collaborated with car and truck manufacturers to make portable satellite radios standard on many high-end luxury vehicles, and an affordable option on most other mid-range vehicles. This trend has now found its way to lower end models since costs have come down and even lower end users want access to this new form of programming. For most of these consumers, the cost of a monthly subscription could now not be prohibitive and by making it easy for them to access their services, XM and SIRIUS could entice consumers to try it out and start spreading the word about its value.

Portable satellite radios were also placed in boats and RVs, and standard receivers were heavily marketed for use in homes and businesses. The first leap in market penetration came late in 2004 with the introduction of the first handheld version of XM Radio and SIRIUS Satellite Radio receivers. These devices were designed to appeal to people who wanted access to satellite radio services while running and walking from place to place in locations other than their cars, trucks, homes or offices. Problem is that the Sirius device was not truly a portable device getting a live feed until now with its latest release of the Stiletto 100 portable personal satellite radio.

Another important component of spreading the word and gaining market traction was establishing partnerships and marketing agreements with electronics retailers such as Circuit City, Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, and other well-known names. Working closely with retailers, XM and SIRIUS have greatly increased their presence with consumers and sales have steadily increased.

Will Consumers Really Pay for Satellite Radio or is Free FM enough?

There are a host of reasons to pay for satellite radio. Here are a few benefits you get with a paid monthly subscription to satellite radio:

More exclusive channel choices (up to 150)

Clear, crisp digital signal (when you have a clear line of sight unfortunately)

Signal available with no fading when driving long distances (ie. keep the same station throughout the trip)

Niche music stations to suit any musical taste (listen to DEVO all day long - ha ha)

Commercial-free (kind of) for music channels

Live audio streaming of sporting events like NBA, NFL, MLB ...

Weather and traffic information for up to date stats

Assortment of sports, talk, and news stations (just another way of saying, Howard Stern 24/7)

What to Expect in Satellite Radio:

Satellite radio service is still a minor player and mostly it is inevitable that these 2 companies will continue to invent and deliver new technology and even more features. XM Radio and SIRIUS Satellite Radio will have to devote resources to such innovations if they are to attract enough subscribers to become profitable. I would expect to see smaller devices, with better recording features and larger display screens and eventually long battery life.
